Dialectical Behavioural Therapy

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy is an adaption of CBT designed to better help those who for a variety of reasons may experience difficulty with chronic emotional dysregulation. DBT combines elements of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) with principles of mindfulness, acceptance, and dialectics—the idea that two seemingly opposing things can both be true at the same time. The therapy emphasises balancing acceptance of one’s current emotional state with the need for change and growth.

  • Individuals with trauma, a personality disorder, an eating disorder or a substance use disorder
  • People who have found previous therapy unhelpful
  • Those engaging in self-harm or suicidal behaviour
  • Individuals with impulsivity or harmful behavioural patterns
  • Those who wish to regulate their emotions more effectively e.g. anger management
  • Individuals who would like skills to navigate relationships effectively and reduce conflict
  • Adolescents and young adults
  • Individuals with high levels of stress

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy integrates several key components that focus on skills development, balancing acceptance and change, and improving emotional regulation. The skills focus on Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness.
