Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a type of therapy designed to help people process and heal from traumatic memories and the emotional distress associated with them. It was developed in the late 1980s as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but it has since been used for a variety of other psychological conditions as well.

EMDR can benefit a wide range of individuals, particularly those who are experiencing a psychological issue linked to one or more unresolved distressing or traumatic memories. It’s often a great option when traditional therapy methods haven’t been fully effective and can be adapted for treating children or adolescents.

EMDR therapy is based on the idea that healing from traumatic or distressing memories can be activated and enhanced through guided eye movements while a person focused on a traumatic memory. This action of focusing on the memory while following eye movements is believed to help the brain reprocess distressing memories in a way that reduces the strength of their emotional activation and integrates them more adaptively.
